So you have just upgraded to WordPress 3.1 and you found that the Custom Fields have gone! Probably you panicked and thought the custom field has gone missing in the latest version of WordPress. Do NOT panic because WordPress would not remove Custom Fields just like that from your favorite blogging platform.

If you are not able to see the custom fields option in your WordPress Add New or Edit page, it simply means that it is not shown in your screen. To get it back on screen, you need to click on the “Screen Options” slide button (look for it at the right corner of your screen in Add New or Edit page, just below the L0gout link). There you go! You can bring the custom fields back on screen now.

Happy Blogging.

When I first told my mom that I don’t plan to work for a company and I would rather start a business of my own (big or small) just after college, she sounded not very happy. That’s one reason why I worked for the first 17 months in Wipro after I left my college.

But why would I rather start a business? Is there any businessman in the family? NO. Have I got the capital? NO. Have I got a mentor? NO. Will I be very good in my business? I don’t know!

But it just felt right. When I thought of what I really want, that’s the only answer I could guess. Wright or wrong, time can only tell. Just like the way I use to do it in the viva-voice of my Electronics paper. Of course, I wish the result be different this time.

Except for a very very few things, I never regretted in life. I grew up that way. Not too much to expect and not too many choices to choose from. But life is once, just once and choices that come to us in this lifetime are the last ones. We don’t often get a second chance. We need to make the right choice to live the life we want, not the life others say we should.

Money, Stability, Respect… we all want it. In fact, we are “conditioned” to want it. It’s like in our blood now and we can hardly shed the hunger. That’s why we should stop bothering about it and concentrate on what we really want.

Ask the little kids what they want in life and you will smile when you hear these funny things. That’s what they want, what they really want from heart (of course for that age, don’t argue you rascal!). Remember, we were once like them, free from all these thoughts and calculations, free from all these responsibilities and routines that we almost forgot what we really want in life.

My take. Forget this boring article, take a deep breath and think what you really want in the next 20 years. Once you find it, you will figure a way out.

I graduated in 2008 with a degree in B.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering and like any other IT engineers in the country, I joined the corpo-”rat” race as a Project Engineer in Wipro Technologies, Bangalore.

For the first few months, life was new and it was exciting. But then, let’s tell the truth, it became boring (I will tell you why in my next article). Well, that’s not the reason why I left my day job though.

So, why actually did I leave my day job?

One – Growth is slow. It is obvious because you are working for someone else. No matter how hard you work, you will stay in the same level for quite some time, you will get the same pay and the same coffee. You spend 10+2 hours everyday for the job and yet you think twice before taking a week’s leave for a holiday with your love ones? Well, that’s no life!

Two – You work where you are required, NOT where you enjoy. Imagine this: You are trained for 3 months in Java, then you are put to work on Wireless Network Planning, and after a few months, you are asked to take a test in Unix for the next project? Yes, this is what actually happens in Wipro and as matter of fact, in any other outsourcing firm in India. A friend of mine who worked for over 1 year in IBM India, told me that after being trained in C and C++, he was made to work in a Unix Server Administration Team where he just needed to reply to tickets saying “Please try again later”, almost in every case. Well after one year, when he was asked to shift to a Java Development Project, he did exactly what he was expert in – told the manager, “Please try again later”.

And if you ask them why they are doing this, they will say “Change is good, and to move forward in life, you need to adapt to changes”. In fact, that is why I left my job… for a change.

Now, I work on a small online business model and I am exploring new things. Plus Points: I love the work and I enjoy doing it. That is what matters the most. Plus, I get what I work for (of course much more than my day job pay) and plenty of time to spend with friends.

Well, there are minus points too. You can’t guarantee the stability and predict the outcome every time. That is true in almost all business models. You have to play with the risk and that’s why you get paid here. And in the online business, you stay a lot at home and don’t get to meet many new people. Here too, life MAY become boring after a while. But with a plan to take the business further, that sure can be managed, I guess.
